There’s a 1-in-8 Chance of a Catastrophic Solar Megastorm by 2020
Posted by lornemilee
The Earth has a roughly 12 percent chance of experiencing an enormous megaflare erupting from the sun in the next decade. This event could potentially cause trillions of dollars’ worth of damage and take up to a decade to recover from.
Okay, see? You want to know what I’m REALLY afraid of?
This shit.
12% chance?
I like those odds.
Now, if it was one in a million, I’d be worried.
Hey, lorn. Why are you afraid of this?
It’s relatively harmless. It plays havoc with electronics, but we aren’t talking some ‘the earth is going to fry’ scenario. I suppose it could be bad for people whose lives depend on electronics the moment it hits, but i’m sure we will be alright and cope.
No, look, I know how they work. One happened in the 1800s and fried a bunch of telegraph wires and the like.
But you mistake my meaning.
Not only is my career based around this shit, but so is how the world operates these days.
Yeah, we’d ultimately survive as a species, but do you know
how much
that would fucking
suck
shit?
